John Edwards: Take Your Medicine and Then GO AWAY [Updated]

Crossposted from MY LEFT WING

During a brief, albeit seismic argument with my husband this afternoon about l'affaire Edwards, some ideas crystallised; I realised just how cataclysmic the effect on Obama will be -- in very short order -- if John Edwards does not step up to the proverbial plate and take full responsibility for the entire goddamned mess. Right fucking now.

And that means take the damned DNA test and let the genes fall where they may.

Edwards's ex-lover refused to countenance a DNA test, claiming it would be an invasion of her privacy. In an absurd leap of logic, the Washington Post posited that "If Hunter sticks to that position, it will ease the pressure on Edwards, who on Friday dropped his earlier denials and admitted to having an affair with Hunter in 2006 but denied being the father of the child."

Apparently Hunter's sister isn't quite as idiotic as the Post...

Edwards, a Democrat who represented North Carolina, maintained in a statement that the affair ended too soon for him to have fathered her baby, Frances Quinn Hunter, who was born Feb. 27. Hunter and a former Edwards fundraiser, Andrew Young, have maintained that Young is the father.

"I would welcome participating in a paternity test," Edwards told ABC's Bob Woodruff on Friday. "Be happy to participate in one. I know that it's not possible that this child could be mine because of the timing of events. . . . Happy to take a paternity test and would love to see it happen."

ABC News reported on its Web site yesterday that Hunter's younger sister Melissa said that Edwards should immediately follow through on his pledge to take a paternity test. "I would challenge him to do so," the sister said. The network did not use a last name for Melissa.

The argument with my husband ensued after he asserted that the baby should have nothing to do with the scandal. I stared at him open-mouthed and began sputtering. Clarity crept in on... little pussy feet.

If, as I now suspect, there is some sort of pre-arranged agreement between Edwards and Hunter that she refuse a DNA test because he may actually be the father of the baby, then his mendacity goes deeper than I could ever have imagined. And he is not only a liar and a cheat, but a thief, as well. The moneys that were paid to Ms. Hunter for the maintenance of her lifestyle and the care and welfare of her self and her child may have come from his campaign funds. And if they did... which is simply corrupt... then he is a fool as well as a liar, cheat and thief. Because he is wealthy beyond belief. There was no earthly reason to have paid her moneys from his campaign -- except to maintain his deceit of his wife. Which brings us back to his life of utter mendacity.

And the only possible redemption for this grotesque series of crimes against decency and basic common sense, for chrissakes, is to take a stand for the salvation of your self-respect, for chrissakes, stand up in front of the whole damned world and admit EVERY GODDAMNED BIT OF THE TRUTH and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, get it ALL out... and then slink away into the shadows, don't let us see your pitiful face or hear your name uttered by ANYONE with a shred of self-respect for at LEAST five years...

and let Barack Obama get back to campaigning for the Presidency with enough time to let us all TRY to forget this horrible, horrible week.

You slimy, pitiful, pathetic embarrassment of an excuse for a man.

I guess the clarity only extends as far as my own skull. What I mean Obama being "slaughtered" by this scandal is that the media attention is focused intently 24/7 on John Edwards and NOT on the election.

Honestly (2.00 / 2)

I do NOT CARE what he does with his cock.

I care what the fucking corporate news media are doing to the fucking campaign.

and Obama is getting SLAUGHTERED by the fucking story.

What I mean by this is, McCain? Who's McCain?

In bed with Big Oil? Hmmm?

But did you hear about Edwards?  Droool.....

Christ. Put this fucking story in the GROUND already.

Re: Honestly (2.00 / 3)

Relax.  Obama has not been/will not be touched by this problem.  If anything, this shines a positive light on Obama because doesn't partake in this activity.  However, I do agree that John Edwards is pretty slimy, especially when you think of his tremendous wife.

I agree with LQ. (none / 0)

This won't touch Obama.  In fact, it might be good to have the more tabloid parts of the media focus on Edwards, who isn't a candidate, for a month or so, so we can get past the summer and into the real campaign.  The Republicans have proven adept at using this period of the election cycle to their advantage in the past.

When it comes to faithfulness, the record favors Obama over McCain.  McCain's past in this regard is not quite as noble as his Hanoi Hilton period.  I bet the McCain is more worried about how this is going to effect McCain than we are about how it will effect Obama.

As for Edwards...  I think all politicians are flawed people, perhaps more flawed than most of us when it comes to their love lifes.  I would just rather not hear about it.  My dad cheated on my mom.  My mom probably (not sure) cheated on my dad.  My wife cheated on me.  I slept with lots of married women.  And I've done some things in my sex life that would make me a HORRIBLE candidate for elected office, and then wrote about them in explicit detail.  So, really, Edwards and his boring little love affair is just boring and a reminder that he was always a lot less holy than some wanted him to be.  If you want to impress me with all this, there have to be at least a safe word, jury-rigged gizmos with wires, and/or some bruises in places the media won't name.  And pictures on Facebook.  Lots and lots of pictures, preferably dressed in vintage clothing or latex.

Another MSOC train wreck! I'm so thrilled to see MSOC contribute to the... um... "quality of discourse" of MyDD. What would we do without her & yellowdem obsessing over John Edwards? ;-)

Edwards and Obama (2.00 / 2)

were not close.

Edwards has nothing to do with the Obama campaign. He will not participate in the DNC convention. His political career is in taters.

Edwards has betrayed the trust of his followers.

I don't see how Obama is getting slaughtered by this story of a man who has nothing to do with his campaign.

That's ridiculous.

Slaughtered in the sense that... (2.00 / 1)

the media are completely focused on Edwards and NOT on the election.

And the longer Edwards continues to obfuscate, the longer the attention is diverted from McCain and HIS mendacity and onto Edwards -- the DEMOCRAT.

The McCain campaign might see this another way. (2.00 / 1)

And the longer Edwards continues to obfuscate, the longer the attention is diverted from McCain and HIS mendacity and onto Edwards -- the DEMOCRAT.

The McCain campaign might be pulling its hair out and saying this:

"Oh shit!  The media are all focused on Edwards' continued obfuscations and not all our well-crafted mendacity!  How will we get our putrid message out now?  We're doomed!  Curse Edwards!"

Re: John Edwards: Take Your Medicine and Then GO A (2.00 / 4)

OMFG we have a war going on, record unemployment and a country on the road to a depression & a man who could help right that path & all we can talk about is that he cheated on his wife.  GMAFB - let's get real here it is time the country started voting for who can do the best job not the candidate they think they'd like the most if they met them.  America's obsession with celebrity needs to end. Guess what? There are people I see on TV that I suspect I'd like /dislike if I knew them BUT I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING THAT UNLESS I ACTUALLY DID KNOW THEM FOR REAL. So when I vote, I vote based upon qualifications not superfluous bullshit like who he slept with or if he has a nice hair cut.  That is the issue that noone is talking about here.

by jrsygrl on Sun Aug 10, 2008 at 04:09:00 PM EST

Exactly. (none / 0)

We have a corporate-run media who love nothing better than salacious stories that have nothing to do with real issues that matter, issues of flesh and blood and life and death.

No, they love sex and celebrity and scandale and slime -- and smearing Democrats, because the Bosses are Republicans. And they'll run with this as long as they can.

Re: YOU vote on those issues. (2.00 / 1)

I know it is just pissing me off to see the sentiment here with people I thought were more informed than that.  John Edwards, I believe, can still do alot of good for America & the fact that he was unfaithful to his wife doesn't change that. We need him more than he needs us, in reality, so the focus should be on figuring out how to help him stay relevant.

He said he wants the test and is perfectly willing (2.00 / 3)

to take it.  Ms. Hunter says won't allow it out of privacy concerns for her daughter, which could of course be a clever ruse on Edwards' part.

Seriously though, I think we should shut the hell up about this.  It's his life, and this won't have much impact on Obama unless people continue to bloviate about it.  Even though true, the matter is still tabloid fodder.  It's between Edwards and his family.  It's unfortunate that he was willing to risk our chances in a dem year, but he's not the nominee, so it's moot.  He's already going to pay very dearly for this, no need to make it worse.

When as a country (2.00 / 2)

did we become so puritan? I'm thankful that FDR, JFK, Truman, Jefferson, MLK, and RFK never had to live through today's political world. All of these men cheated on their wives but still manage to do things which made America great and got us through the most difficult time in our history. However, if FDR was running against Hoover in today's world, Hoover would have won the presidency and FDR would have been out of a political career.  Hoover would have never given us Social Security and the Great Depression would have lasted alot longer. If the civil rights movement led by MLK was happening in today's politcal world, people would be demanding (including so called liberals)that MLK quit making speeches and retire to his wife simply because he cheated on his wife. I'm sorry but this whole thing pisses me off. If you truly believe Edwards is disqualified because of an affair and for lying about it (he's not the first guy or women to lie about an affair), then you also have to believe that FDR, MLK, RFK, JFK and Jefferson were horrible people and did not deserve their success and should have remain silence with their ideas. Edwards was the only democratic candidate willing to stand up for the struggling working class and poor. When he dropped out, both Clinton and Obama quit talking about them as they did not exist. Some people are stuggling and really need help. They are being taking advantage by corporate greed. The fact that Obama does not believe corporate greed is a problem tells me that we still need Edwards voice. The fact that Obama does not use the word poverty in his speeches tells me we still need Edwards. Who cares if he cheated and lied? Some of our best leaders and presidents have committed the same mistake but went on to make our country better.

Hallelujah! (2.00 / 1)

Yes, yes, yes.
John Edwards was the only one up there on stage at those debates with the gall to be talking about the people who go unseen in this country.  Nobody else in politics (nobody I can think of right now, at least) even talks about them: the American poor, the hopeless, the overwhelmed.  They're the ones who clean our offices after we've gone home.  How many of us know who they are or what kind of lives they lead?  They're the ones cleaning up the puke and unclogging the toilets on Sunday morning at American college dorms, after American college students get through partying all weekend.  How often do college kids laugh at or sneer at these people?  How often are they and their lives waved away as pathetic and not worthy of respect?
John Edwards stood up there and talked about what we owe these people, people who work hard and struggle to stay afloat.  That's why I respect him, still, and as long as he makes this his work, I will always respect him.
John Edwards screwed up.  All right, let's get thag out of the way.  Nobody thinks he should have done that, not his wife, not even he himself.  But he did it anyway, most likely even at the time knowing it was wrong.  So let's sternly wag our fingers at him, and feel smug about our own superiority a little bit, and get over it.
It isn't the end of the world; it wasn't even the end of his marriage.  He did it, it was wrong, he was wrong, let's get on with things.
And I really hope this isn't the end of his political career, as cheating didn't end Roosevelt's career or Kennedy's career or Bill Clinton's career, among others.  He's willing to stand up for and speak for the poor in this country, even when nobody else with his profile will.  For that alone, he has earned our respect and backing, whatever wrongs or sins or mistakes he might have committed.

GO AWAY (2.00 / 5)

So your idea is to shut this circus down by staging a media event-style DNA test?  If it proves Edwards right then the media get to focus on finding the real father & the myriad of stories they can develop on father vs candidate, etc.  If they play their cards right they can build this into a mini Anna Nicole Smith without the boobs or billions (or death).   If it proves Edward wrong then there's another big bump in the outrage & endless coverage of his parental responsibilities.

I somehow miss the intelligence of this line of 'reasoning'.  I say just stop giving oxygen to this mess.

I'm actually MORE pissed at his handlers.... (none / 0)

If there is righteous anger here, who I am getting more pissed off at is the morans who run political campaigns?

It's becoming more and more clear as people look into "Reille's background" (not her original name, I guess) she was a notorious party girl in NY, with a history that any first year detective would have red-flagged as someone not to let within 50 miles of ANY young male political candidate?

So, did they do ANY background checks on her?

After he picked her up in a bar, and she insinuated herself into the campaign?

I'm NOT letting Edwards off the hook, but, for god's sakes, what's with the idiots that run these campaigns?

I honestly don't understand what the big deal is.  About half the married people I know cheat on each other.  One of the major party candidates this year is married to a woman who he had an affair with.  The last Democrat to win the white house had multiple infidelity scandals blow up in his face in the middle of the goddamn election and he still won.

This piece of crap is worthy, maybe, of the National Enquirer. It is full of 'ifs' and 'may haves' and is a monument to the diarists gut reaction.
